Sop Statement Of Purpose

7 mistakes to avoid while writing your SOP when applying for a university abroad

Nowadays, writing your Statement of Purpose (SOP), also known as a Personal Statement has been seen as rather challenging for most students. More often than not, realise that you need to share truths about yourself seems to hold applicants back.

Fear not! Here are a few pointers to be wary of whilst in the process of SOP writing:

  1. Note that this must be an original document. You do not need to copy off ideas from another person’s SOP. Showing that your thoughts are your own and that you’re a genuine candidate who has taken the time to understand the course that he/ she is applying to, can take your approval a long way.
  2. Avoid writing the SOP at the last moment. The SOP requires a lot of thought and application. Deciding the flow of your message will show that you have taken the time to plan and write your SOP. It will also display how well-organised and detail-oriented you are.
  3. Avoid writing dull opening statements in your first paragraph. Your opening paragraph must be catchy and engaging, making the reader want to read more.
  4. Avoid rambling and repetition of sentences. Go straight to the point you want to make. Ensure you use vocabulary that provides brief details.
  5. Avoid using content that will go against you. Be honest yet careful not to overshare information that may be misleading, confusing or can be seen as insignificant to your application.
  6. While demonstrating your positive attributes and qualities, avoid writing pompous statements that make you appear arrogant and pretentious.
  7. Don’t forget to reiterate the main message in your concluding paragraph. The conclusion must reinforce your commitment to the course.
