Facilities & Overview

Established in 1884, Bangor University has a long tradition of excellence and exceeds expectations, both for academic standards and student experience. Bangor is a strong, confident institution recognised regionally, nationally and internationally as a centre of excellence for its varied portfolio of teaching and research, and for the unique, multicultural, inclusive experience it provides for its staff and students.

Bangor University has a long tradition of academic excellence and a strong focus on the student experience. Around 10,000 students currently study at the University, with teaching staff based within fourteen Academic Schools. It is ranked in the top 40 in the UK for research*, according to the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014. The REF recognised that more than three-quarters of Bangor’s research is either world-leading or internationally excellent, ahead of the average for UK universities. Research is central to Bangor University; it is an integral part of its teaching and a passion of all academic staff. The 2014 Research Excellence Framework recognised that more than three-quarters of Bangor’s research is either world-leading or internationally excellent, ahead of the average for all UK universities. Bangor researchers come from over 30 countries worldwide and collaborate with colleagues from over 120 nations.

Location:

Students can live in one of the most scenic locations in the UK as they study. Nestled between the mountains and the sea, Bangor is more than just beautiful: it’s a playground for nature lovers. Hike, climb, kayak or canoe in nearby Snowdonia National Park, head to the beaches on Anglesey or take the plunge on Europe’s fastest zip wire. Clubs and Societies: The award-winning Students’ Union clubs and societies are all free to join. Students have around 200 to choose from so they are bound to find something they like. In the 2020 What Uni Student Choice Awards, Bangor University was voted 2nd in the UK for Sports and Societies. The location near Snowdonia also means that adventure is on the doorstep. Teaching Excellence: Bangor offers the highest quality teaching in a supportive learning environment and students can be assured that they will be taught by lecturers who want to see them thrive. The Gold award in the UK government’s Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) reflects a commitment to ensuring students succeed. Bangor was given the highest possible award due to teaching quality and students’ learning outcomes.
